Bye Bye Savannah….
Yesterday started with our Hop on/off Trolley tour. Just in case we had missed any sights this will be an overview of the entire historic area with a live narrative about the 15 stops. We had Justice as our driver- she was awesome! A real native to Savannah, she danced & sang at the White House 2 times, she says her daddy didn’t name her Justice for nothing! She pointed out the bench where Forrest Gump sat and all the areas that film was made throughout the town. We saw many cotton warehouses, and all the cool hotels in old historic buildings from the 1800’s. They are allowed to redo the inside, but the shell of every building must remain the same. Very interesting look around here. I would for sure stay at the JW Marriot next time. We decided we still need to tour the Synagogue, the cathedral, and Jepson Modern art museum. We enjoyed the leisure tour, I gave boots a break from walking. Btw- thank you to our fans….we LOVED all the replies. Susan G, mom wants you to know she was surprised she wore the hat too, 🤣her hair is sooo upsetting her on this adventure. Lol CUJ I will include the wet puppy picture here…. She approved. We so appreciate the texts, emails, fb comments etc.
Okay, we joined our food walking tour group for the next 3 hours. It was so perfect for my mama….we had 2 kids and a lady in a wheel chair, this was gonna be a great speed for Boots. We started at our hotel restaurant for the infamous Shrimp & grits, I must say if made with good ingredients I really like it. Some places add stuff Im not a fan of, these were delish. I do like grits! Next stop was Rhett’s- https://www.diningwithrhett.com/?utm_source=local-listings&utm_medium=organic&utm_campaign=yext-diningwithrhett where we tried the famous She-crab soup, another favorite. We were both happy to try it but agreed we could not eat an entire bowl. This is the Southern version of a New England clam chowder, but a reddish creamy colored soup with pieces of crab making it have a salty yummy flavor. Our guide, Riley was soooo fun. She normally leads a pub crawl teaching you about southern cocktails. It turned into a bit of that for me. 😂The gay couple from Alabama were my counterparts. Two guys with piercing beautiful blue eyes. They were from Montgomery and do a pre-Christmas getaway for 1 week to explore US cities they have never been. The 3 of us had the Chatham Artillery’s Punch, which reminded me of a jungle juice from college days, had a peach bellini, and I had the watermelon Mojito at “Mint to be my mojito”. The tour was an eclectic tour of all foods, as Savannah has a diverse dining scene with famous chef’s representing all types of flavor. Another favorite was a sausage roll, not a fan of the fried green tomato biscuit or the chicken empanada….we ended with a honey tasting. Crazy how different honey can taste. The best part was the weather today, the sun was shining and Riley pointed out so many places to us on the walk. We befriended the fancy couple from NJ, and chatted on the walk. Riley would sit us down on benches in these historic squares and share story’s along the walk. Leaves were blowing, children were giggling, beautiful scenery out of a movie set before our eyes. This was the first day we didn’t need our coats, gloves or hat to be outside. Boots needed a break as her body is aching. I will say how blessed I am to have my mama by my side for these adventures. So grateful always!! We made our way to rest before needing to be at our dinner reservation, I know- oink oink.
Tonights meal is at the famous Olde Pink House restaurant, a signature staple if you visit Savannah. The story is that it became a restaurant in 1992, after being abandoned in 1988. It had been a tea room since 1908. Someone famous or important lived here….Im forgetting that fact. A reservation only type place, we had heard mixed reviews but wanted to try it. It is a known monument in town. One of those tourist trap places…many locals told us we still had to try it. We walked there as to ensure some exercise. My diet starts tomorrow. I was a little tipsy from the day of drinking and we had some good laughter while awaiting our table, outside on a bench people watching a huge group of 75 men entering the place. They were on a business trip, something to do with oil/gas. We were the door greeters. Another had to be there moment.
Mama thinks Im silly. Goldilocks has kidnapped Boots….this lady is hot or cold. Ha ha we were seated by a fire place in what used to be the master bedroom of this Olde Pink house….I will admit .the room was already a bit warm. She requested more air, and of course asked me to sit by the fire. They are all about southern hospitality. That air started blowing…..Goldilocks was now cold, putting on her scarf, coat, and requested it to be made warmer. My tipsy mood was good for this occasion. It was sooo funny, our waiter tonight got a kick out of us. Anyways,….she got a glass of moscato and a Pink Lady for me. We shared yummy food here too, and chose to venture out to a different place for dessert.
Ended up at our waiters recommendation…. “ Better than Sex”. Okay….this place was a trip. I could just imagine my Aunt Marlene in this place laughing so hard. We walked….the place was not crowded, thankfully. It was dark lighting, silk curtains between each table, and these workers play the part. Saying things like, “ what can I get you to help make you wet”, that was there way of asking what you wanted to drink. Then when taking your order, what can I deliver for your pleasure”. The menu items were all titled so X- rated, and the descriptions of all desserts were over the top. It is a chain, in 4 other cities. Our waiter, I think got off on speaking to you with serious looks of seduction. The people that were there, were mostly groups celebrating a special occasion. We got a Birthday Suit, Boots not impressed….I ate it. Oink oink….it was like a brie-blueberry toasted sandwich with a strawberry dipping sauce. She thought it was garbage….I give it a 7.5/8. I still loved last nights dinner the best, Vic’s on the River is a must eat if ever in Savannah.
Headed back for the night, had to pack. This morning started with a quick bite at The Maple Biscuit for eggs finally. Nothing can be ordinary in these parts. Our eggs were a Frittataffle. Basically its an omelette made in a cast iron waffle maker. We made our way to the 3rd oldest synagogue in the USA. Congregation Mickve Israel has been here since the 1700’s. The cool part of going inside and doing the tour was learning the connection to Lisbon, Portugal. Having just been there and heard all about the Portuguese escaping from Lisbon to go to England, then to hear many left England to go to Savannah. Crazy how dots connect through life. All the dominoes tell a story and fall into place. Also, there was a plaque of remembrance here for Ruth Bader Ginsberg…when I inquired the gentleman didn’t know it was there and said a congregant must have wanted her remembered, as she did not have a connection to the temple. This is a reform synagogue. He shared there are roughly 10K jews living in Savannah today. I heard someone in a bathroom say, “ you could spend 1 month in Savannah and still not see everything”, I concur….It was such a cool town!
We are now on the plane headed back home. This was my last trip for 2022. I certainly made up for the lack of travel this year all in a row. Hope you enjoyed coming along. Now its time to work non-stop and help grow this awesome tree. 🌳
Until next time….
Love Always Laurie Sue, AKA- Dora….and Boots.
